3D MODELING OUTSOURCING

One of the most critical jobs a 3D model developer undertakes is getting or replicating the color of 3D Model as a keen visualizer. In this article we present a predictable and practical workflow that we follow to get the most accurate and near same replica of colors while coloring 3D Model.

The very first step is to get or match the temperature of your color, critically sorting out the gamma for input and output images including for the monitor display. Some of the advance platforms like 3ds Max automatically enables the gamma correction and set the value to 2.2 by default which in a way ensures that the input monitor at the Designers place correctly translates the input voltage for accurate light output.

Now after getting the first step right and sorting out the gamma correction, it’s time to actually create the color for our 3D model in 3ds Max. In general 3ds Max offers two options to the designers to create colors, first one being through a bitmap and the other through 3ds Max color selector tool. In general 3ds Max handles the first method pretty well as the option of bitmap is quite straight forward for example while coloring linear files such as HDRI it by default takes in the alignment of 1.0, on the other hand while Designer is coloring a non-linear file such as JPEGs the system ensures alignment of 2.2 by default. Also an important point to note is that, designer have an option to override the gamma of a bitmap while selecting the image file for import. So our recommendation to designers is that if they wish a specific color to represent their 3D Model they can well create it using their preferred image creation and editing software tool and then import the image to 3ds Max as a bitmap file.

Coming to our second option i.e. using color selector; things start getting more complicated as one dive deep while working on color selector tool. Good part of color selector tool is that the color of the bitmap gets corrected but unfortunately the tool doesn’t offer designers an easy option of selecting a custom color. To get a custom color created designers undertake some calculations to convert specific R, G and B values into the correct color space. The simple mathematical formula to get these values could be stated as 255 x (( old value / 255)^2.2 ), designer can straight away go to the numeric field in 3ds Max and press Ctrl + N which ‘ll bring up the numerical expression evaluator. Designers can simply place the old value in the field and extract the resulting value back to be apply on the 3D Model, this practice shall ensure a correct replication of the color.
